On Friday, October 1, 2021, Kyoto Seika began selling halal and vegan lunch boxes on campus.
Since publishing our statement on diversity in March 2016, we have strived to improve our campus environment, including installing universal toilets and labeling all meat dishes on cafeteria menus. As international students make up 25% of our student body, we must provide a campus environment where our students can eat without worry and have considered making halal food available on campus for some time.
A proposal to provide halal food was made as a part of a donation from the Kyoto Seika Parents Association, and with the support of two local restaurants, we are now able to provide these lunch boxes on campus. With the generous support of the Parents Association, we are able to sell the lunch for just 500 yen, half of the regular price.
In addition to halal, we are also offering vegan lunch boxes. By expanding on-campus menus to reflect the diversity of our international students and university body, we hope that our Japanese students will gain a better understanding of different cultures through food.
